MP Kremikovtsi is being restored, only the money under the Recovery Plan is waiting
The Kremikovtsi behemoth has been spewing out production and polluting Sofia for years

Bulgaria plans to restore the metallurgical giant Kremikovtsi with European funds. This idea was launched last week after a meeting of the Bulgarian government with European institutions and with the leaders of Rheinmetall. However, the specific parameters of the deal were only shared today, on April 1, due to concerns that another Balkan country may also want to revive its metallurgical industry
The government's current idea is to create a modern steel complex from the remains of MP Kremikovtsi, which will produce products mainly for the European market. This involves the production of not only ordinary steel coils, but also rolled products from "green steel", those familiar with the negotiations explained to 3eNews.
The new project is expected to be a fully state-owned company, also financed by the public sector. At a later stage, huge industrial giants such as ThyssenKrupp, Arselor Mital, MetInvest or Voestalpine will be involved in the management. Such a large investment in the Sofia field has not been seen in years in our country, local people comment. They are happy to join the initiative and restore the work of the metallurgical complex, which for decades polluted the air over the whole of Sofia.
The lack of the necessary raw materials for the operation of the machines is not a problem these days, since we already have an established and excellently functioning road and railway infrastructure. Because of this, it is possible that the scheme of exporting finished products by train to the port in Lom and from there traveling to the heart of Europe may once again be reached.
Green steel is now a key sector for Bulgaria’s recovery and development plan. After it became clear that we could lose the money from the RSP, the government quickly developed a project to absorb the funds and redirect them to the megalomaniacal project located near the Stara Planina Mountains.
At the moment, the Kremikovtsi site looks more like a battlefield, one electric furnace operating, but within three years an entirely new modern complex will emerge there, thanks to the expertise of Rheinmetall. After this investment, Bulgaria will once again stand proudly on the global stage for the supply of metals and raw materials. Experts even believe that the future plant will be able to be converted into a military one in a week, thus creating tanks for the future European army.
Investments in steel production are important for the revival of the Bulgarian industry and for the construction of new large-scale projects, including nuclear power plants, new hydroelectric power plants, highways, bridges and railways. A place for the construction of a small modular reactor, as well as a data center, is planned on the site of the new Green Kremikovtsi zone. Operations to start production will be financed mainly by cryptocurrencies, due to the inability of the state to allocate money from the budget. At a later stage, payments from the RSP will also come, explained to our media.
For now, the problem with personnel remains to e solved, but people will agree to work on site, as long as they manage to buy a house at affordable prices in a remote Sofia district.
Until a few years ago, the view in the Kremikovtsi metallurgical plant was like the scenery of a horror movie.
The published news is an April Fool's joke and cannot be an example of investments. For years, the state has given up on research and attracting investors in heavy metallurgy in our country. The last similar attempts were with the idea of "Kremikovtsi" becoming a plant of the VW group, which news in itself also sounds like a publication for April 1.
